Center for Science and Society Student Initiative

One of the goals in this fifth year of the Center for Science and Society is to build a larger, more connected community of students looking for interdisciplinary education, research, and collaboration at the intersection of science and society.  

To that end, the Center will be working throughout the year on several new student initiatives for undergraduate and graduate students.

  1. Tell us what “Science and Society” means to you and win $250: In honor of the Center’s fifth anniversary, we invite all current students to participate in our anniversary video contest. Send us a short video sharing what “science and society” means to you and win an Amazon gift card! Deadline: October 16.

  2. Welcome Back Lunch - September 25: Columbia students, postdocs, and faculty are invited to join us for lunch to celebrate the start of the 2019-2020 year. RSVP on Eventbrite and come learn about upcoming events, funding opportunities, and interdisciplinary courses, many especially for students.

  3. Seed Grant applications due October 25: The Center invites proposals for innovative interdisciplinary projects involving collaborative research and programming. 

We will be holding an optional informational meeting on October 3. Learn more about this year’s theme, brainstorm and meet potential partners and collaborators. To attend, please email [email protected] with your name and discipline. 

  1. Film screenings: Planning is underway for a Science and Society film series for undergrads with post-film commentary by experts across the University.  Stay tuned for details.

  2. Graduate Student Dissertation Discussion Group: Have an interdisciplinary dissertation topic and want to share your ideas, research, and questions with like-minded students from other fields? We will have sign-ups during the Welcome Back Lunch, or email [email protected] to be added to the list.
