Making and Knowing Project's Dye Residency

February 25, 2025

In fall 2024, the Making and Knowing Project (a Center for Science and Society Research Cluster) had the incredible honor of hosting expert textile dyers Bertha Estrada Huipe and Mateo Rodriguez Estrada from Ahuirán, Mexico

Over 10 days, students had the opportunity to work alongside Bertha and Mateo, learning more about the materials for creating natural colors (including marigold flowers, coconut husks, and pomegranate peels), Purépecha craft techniques, and the many forms of knowledge (including environmental, cultural, historical, and tacit) that are embedded in dyeing.

Learn more about Bertha's decades of experience and experimentation in the video above!

This visit was supported by the Columbia Climate School and Luce Foundation.
