Southern University Environmental Humanities Grants awarded

The Center for Science and Society is thrilled to announce the first Environmental Humanities Grant award from our partnership with Southern University and A&M College!

Located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Southern University is Columbia University's historically black college and university (HBCU) partner. Since 2024, Center staff have regularly met with faculty and leadership at Southern University to develop the framework of this grant collaboration, exchange best practices, and design a grant program tailored to Southern University's specific needs and administrative structure. Cynthia Braynt, Dean of the College of Humanities and Interdisciplinary Studies, led the effort at Southern University.

The Environmental Humanities Grant programs at Columbia University and Southern University and A&M College are funded by the Mellon Foundation.

The first Environmental Humanities Grant at Southern University was awarded to Taylor Scott for her project Mad Weather, a musical ensemble performance that explores the intersections of ecological crisis and racial identity. Taylor is an Assistant Professor of English at Southern University.

Congratulations to Taylor!
