Event Description
This conversation will discuss some of the methodological questions and concerns in studying science and religion in India. RennyThomas will discuss the possibilities of studying science and religion without falling into the trap of essentialisms, and the contemporary challenges of the academic study of science and religion. The discussion will explore the possibilities of STS and history of science in making sense of the non-dual worlds of science and religion; and argues that it offers a grammar to understand the ‘negotiations’, ‘strategies’, and ‘collaborations’ of these categories.
For an informed global anthropology and history of science and religion, it is necessary that we shift the focus of discussion from the West to the non-Western sites as it enriches the discussion and gives new narratives and vocabularies to talk about science and religion.
