Event Description

A panel discussion examining the role of ethics and normative approaches in ethical, legal, and social implications of genetics (ELSI) research. Normative approaches have been central to the ELSI field since its beginning; however, many contemporary ELSI scholars are less familiar with this approach and find translating their empirical findings into normative arguments daunting. This session will use the case of expanded newborn screening to explore several aspects of Normative approaches in ELSI research. This session will define normative methods and nomenclature, explain the relationship between normative research and empirical work, and outline potential mechanisms for delivering normative arguments.
