Zoe Crossland
Zoë Crossland is an anthropologist and historical archaeologist. She researches the landscape histories of highland Madagascar, co-directing The Sacred Rice Project with her colleague Chantal Radimilahy (University of Antananarivo). The project traces the history of irrigated rice agriculture in highland Madagascar, with a particular focus on the constitution of sovereignty through and with the partnership of rice plants, paddy fields and irrigation structures. She is co-editing The Malagasy World with Chantal Radimilahy and Kristina Douglass, which will be the first book to present a comprehensive overview of archaeological work across Madagascar. Crossland also publishes on semiotics, forensic anthropology, and evidential practices around human remains. She is currently completing a book on forensic anthropology that explores the forensic trace and the life of evidence.
