Matthew Delvaux

Matthew Delvaux is Assistant Professor of History at Barnard College. His current research focuses on the Viking Age slave trade that drew in captives from Carolingian Europe and sold them into the markets of Central Asia, as well as the Abbasid exports of glass and silver that helped draw in this and other slave trades. He works on texts in Latin, Old English, Old Norse, and Arabic, and he has experience in archaeological fieldwork and the chemical analysis of glass. He is also at work on “Textile Colours of the Viking Age,” a research project housed at the National Museum of Denmark. His work has been supported by the Medieval Academy of America, the American-Scandinavian Foundation, and Independent Research Fund Denmark, and he was previously a member of the Princeton Society of Fellows.
