This course takes Octavia E. Butler’s enigmatic expression, “There’s nothing new under the sun, but there are new suns” as a guide for exploring the politics of Black speculative fiction, science fiction, and fantasy. With literary, sonic, visual, and cinematic examples, this class considers the contexts of possibility for re/imagining Black pasts, presents and futures. Particular attention will be paid to how Black speculative fiction creates new worlds, social orders, and entanglements. We will consider the multiple meanings and various uses of speculation and worlding as we encounter and interpret forms of utopian, dystopian, and (post)apocalyptic thinking and practice.
