Graduate Seminar

The transition to a low-carbon economy is of particular relevance to emerging markets, which have become the largest emitters of greenhouse gases. Such transition is creating considerable challenges but also opening significant opportunities: by 2030, close to $100 trillion of investments will be needed in order to ensure that global temperatures don’t rise by over 2° above pre-industrial levels, with most to be invested in the infrastructure sector in emerging markets. The class will explore the challenges faced by emerging markets, and particularly by China, in moving towards more sustainable growth. It will also examine the new institutions and instruments that are being put in place to channel investments towards the greening of emerging market economies. Students will gain a good understanding of the issues faced by emerging markets in the transition to a low-carbon economy.
