Undergraduate and Graduate Laboratory

This laboratory will focus on archaeobotany, the study of people and plant relationships in the past, with a focus on macrobotanical materials. Each week will involve a mix of seminar and laboratory practicums focused on building the skills needed to conduct independent archaeobotanical research. Students will work with an assemblage of macrobotanical remains from highland Madagascar, including seeds, nuts, wood, and other plant tissues visible with low powered microscopy. During class practicums, students will learn about sampling for plant remains, creating a comparative reference collection, seed and charcoal identification, and other analytical techniques both quantitative and qualitative. We will also learn about the recovery and analysis of microbotanical remains, such as pollen, starch, and phytoliths.
