UN3144: Ecologies of Transmedia Performance | H. Worthen

Theatre
Undergraduate Seminar
T 2:10-4PM and W 4:10-6PM

The intersection of theatre and new media technology has produced new modes of transmedia—immersive, multisite, and networked—performance, which rely on a variety of platforms and formats, the use of haptic and virtual reality technology, video and music mapping, and bodily and sensory augmentations. Exploring transmedia performance as a medial interaction in the physical space of theatre and a multiplatform environment incorporating live, online, and digital interactions, this course engages the NYPL for the Performing Arts archive.

Involving students in a mutually informing practice of critical transmedia theory and design, Ecologies of Transmedia Performance consists of a seminar and a lab, integrating several activities: experiencing transmedia performances; conceptualizing transmedia environments and transmediality; conducting archival research into transmedia theatre; and designing a transmedia exhibition
