GU4233: Sonic Modernity in East Asia | H. Choi

East Asian Languages and Cultures
Undergraduate and Graduate Seminar
F 12:10-2PM

This course examines how sound reproduction technology, namely gramophones and radio, caused changes in culture and society across East Asia in the first half of the 20th century. We will study the modern transformation of sound culture, such as new modes of production and consumption along with the emergence of popular music at the intersection of colonialism and capitalism. Through music and the music industry, we will come to understand East Asia as a dynamic, interconnected cultural and economic region with a coeval soundscape. In most classes, students will examine digitized original recordings of relevant music from China, Taiwan, Japan, and Korea.
