Call for Applications: Graduate Student Interest Group Funding, Center for Science and Society

Eligibility

Groups must be led by a full-time graduate student at Columbia University or Teachers College. Groups led by students from different disciplines are especially welcome. Groups do not need to be officially recognized or registered with any Columbia University office. 

Amount

Up to four awards are available in amounts up to $500. Funds must be used within one year of award. Please note:

  • Honorariums or stipends cannot be provided to any Columbia University faculty, student, or staff.
  • Funds cannot be used to purchase alcoholic beverages. 
  • Funding cannot be used for any food consumed off-campus. 
  • Funding cannot be used for travel or accommodation costs. 
  • Funding cannot be used for any past events.
  • Funding cannot be used for dissertation projects
  • Funds can be used for meeting supplies/materials, on-campus meals, outside speaker honorarium, publication fees, and A/V services. 

Description

The Center for Science and Society invites proposals for graduate student interest groups that explore topics at the intersection of science and society. Group activities can take many forms including reading/book discussions, writing/editing, workshops and training, guest speakers, literary/media projects, or field trips. Groups must be open to all graduate students at Columbia University. 

The Center for Science and Society can provide use of its conference room (pending availability), help publicize group meetings, and other administrative assistance as needed.

To apply, please submit the following as a single PDF to [email protected] with “Student Interest Group Grant” in the subject line of the email: 

  • Group description including the group’s goals and how it furthers interdisciplinary teaching, research, and/or outreach (up to 700 words)
  • Proposed meeting dates and activities 
  • Budget with a line-by-line breakdown and justification of all expenses and list of any outside support (if applicable)
  • A list of other organizations applied to for funding.
  • CVs or short biographies of group leaders and list of potential group members.
