Event Description

Contemporary US efforts to conduct scientific research on Mars have captured the imagination with fantasies of increasingly autonomous rovers engaging in advanced scientific discovery. In this talk, Maya Cruz demonstrates how scientific imaginaries and fantasies of autonomy, intelligence and discovery are co-produced in ways that re-inscribe older logics of US settler colonialism in new technological terms. She then turns to anti-colonial and woman of color feminist practices of speculation, poetics, and care as modes of "terraformation" - a feminist science praxis with which we might create more livable planetary futures.

Maya Cruz, Assistant Professor in Comparative Studies at Ohio State University
